Watching the bubbles emerge while they cook means you’ve nailed these classic British crumpets, which are surprisingly easy to make.
Ingredients
Jam
350 g fresh strawberries
50 ml water
275 g jam sugar
Crumpets
115 g strong white flour
115 g plain flour
1/2 tsp cream of tartar
1/2 sachet of dried yeast (4g)
250 ml warm water
1 pinch of salt
1/2 tsp bicarbonate of soda
75 ml warm milk
Step 1
MAKE THE JAM
If used, sterilize your clean jam jar in the oven at 140°C for 20 minutes before letting it cool. Place the fruit, sugar, and water in a pot; bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 15 minutes. After allowing to cool slightly, transfer to the sterile jam jar.

Step 2
START THE BATTER
Mix the cream of tartar, yeast, and flour in a bowl. Cover with clingfilm and set aside for about an hour after adding the warm water on top and beating it with a spoon.

Step 3
FINISH THE BATTER
After an hour, add the salt, cover, and continue cooking for a further 15 minutes. Bicarbonate of soda and milk should be combined before being thoroughly added to the batter.

Step 4
GRIDDLE
Grease the inside of the rings and heat a sizable frying pan over medium heat. The batter should be filled halfway up the crumpet rings, and it should cook for 4-5 minutes, or until holes begin to emerge, and the crumpet is almost set. Turn the bubbled side over for a few minutes until the bubbling side has similarly turned color after removing the heated ring using a tea towel or tongs.

Step 5
SERVE
Toasted bread should be spread with butter and a spoonful of jam before consumption or later reheating. produce eight crumpets.
